“Self Portrait: Artist's Statement”
Works of art can have ambiguous meanings which provoke people to get lost in their individual world of imagination. The greatness of art is that it can have countless interpretations, with something to say everytime. Interpreting someone's work of art is like deciphering heiroglyphics, with only one thing in mind, trying to unravel the mystery of artist's purpose for creating a certain piece of art.

A self portrait does not necessarily have to be a depiction of the artist, but it can incorporate various things that revolve around his or her mind. I put a picture of myself in a vortex and placed in the middle to show a variety of things that revolve around me. I put pictures of Jak and Daxter (top left and bottom right) because the “Jak and Daxter” game series are some of my favorite video games.

I put my face in both of these pictures so that I can portray myself as part of a video game character. I put a picture of me holding a gun in order to represent another one of my favorite video games, “ Devil May Cry.” I put myself in this picture instead of the original character in order to express how extraordinary and amusing it would be to be part of a game and look at things from a different perspective. The Dragon Ball Z represents my favorite cartoon anime when I was in third grade. This reflection of the past also allows me to flashback on lost and forgotten memories. The picture of the Nintendo characters represents my youth and childhood years. Nintendo 64 was the first game system I ever had, the infamous Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Bowser, Link, and Yoshi are a few of the characters that represent Nintendo's significance and what it stands for. The picture with a lot of curves was the picture I sketched in art class. I made some changes to it in order to make the audience figure out what they are gazing at. I chose to put all the pictures with a lot of curves in order to show that they are all being sucked into the vortex on my mind.
